High blood pressure
affects millions of people in the US. These people are at increased risk of
stroke and heart attack. It has no symptoms. The only way for you to know if
you have high blood pressure is to have it measured using an accurate blood
pressure machine.
If you are considering buying a blood pressure
machine it is important that you make an informed purchase. It is worth
investigating the quality and various types available before you buy a machine
for home use.
If you are worried about high blood pressure, or if Ive
already been diagnosed with high blood pressure, you should consider purchasing
your own blood pressure machine. While you can always go to your doctor's
office to have your blood pressure taken on a regular basis, home blood
pressure monitors are more convenient. This is especially true of people who
have what is known as white coat anxiety syndrome. This is when people seem
have much higher blood pressure readings while in their doctors office. They
can often get more accurate readings when they are relaxed in their own
homes.
There are many different types of home blood pressure machines.
There are also many brands to choose from. It is always best to check with your
doctor to see which type or brand he or she recommends. You can also do
research on the Internet to find the brand with the highest level of accuracy
and convenience.
There are basically three different types of home
blood pressure machines that are easy and convenient to use: digital, wrist,
and finger models. These are all electronic devices, and are the most popular
because they are easy to use. They cost between thirty to over a hundred
dollars for a good machine.
Digital or cuff blood pressure machines can
be manual or automatic, and they all have an LCD display. The manual blood
pressure monitors make you to pump up the cuff yourself according to their
directions. The automatic monitors will do this for you. You just push a button
and sit back and wait for a reading. When using these types of blood pressure
monitors be sure to have the proper size cuff. Home monitors are usually
packaged with a regular, adult sized cuff. Larger people should use a larger
cuff or the readings will not be accurate. Larger cuffs can usually be ordered
from the manufacturer.
Some people like to use a wrist blood pressure
monitor because they are easy to use and smaller. They are very convenient, but
are cost more than a regular cuff type machine. There is a lot of controversy
about how accurate the wrist monitor is. Some tests have shown the wrist
monitor to be as accurate as any other type of device, but other tests show the
complete opposite. Your doctor will be able to tell you which type he or she
prefers.
A newer development is the finger monitor. With this device
you place your finger in a plastic tube and wait for the reading. This method
is not as reliable as other methods because the blood flow into the finger is
much weaker than in the upper arm or wrist.
In order to be sure that
your readings are as accurate as possible you should sit quietly for at least 5
minutes before taking a reading. Smoking or drink caffeinated beverages 30
minutes before you take a reading may result in higher readings. If you have
difficulty using your home blood pressure machine you should get help from a
healthcare professional.
